Spotting The Need For Garage Door Spring Repairs

Blog

While the need to repair rust, corrosion, dents, or other cosmetic damage to your garage door may be important to the curb appeal of your home, these types of repairs do not typically impact the way your door actually functions. Furthermore, cosmetic damage to your door will not have any impact on your ability to operate your door safely. The same cannot be said about damage to your garage door springs. That is why it is so important for you to be able to spot the need for repairs to this vital part of your garage door system as quickly as possible. Thankfully, spotting the need for garage door spring repair can be relatively easy once you know what to look for.

Uneven Weight Distribution

The primary function of your garage door springs is to support and control the weight of the door while it is opening and closing. This is accomplished using springs on both sides of the door, as well as springs that stretch across the width of the door.  If one or more of your springs are in need of repair or replacement, this will result in an uneven weight distribution. While the door will likely still be able to open and close, you will notice that the door no longer remains level during this process. The uneven nature of the door will be slight at first but will continue to worsen until the repairs are completed. The longer you continue to use the door without making the necessary repairs, the more likely your springs will be to break completely. This can result in a serious safety hazard. That is why it is so important to react quickly and contact a garage door repair contractor as soon as you notice that your door is no longer opening evenly.

Slow Opening Door

Another good indication that your garage door springs are beginning to wear out is a door that is opening slower than it once did. While this slower opening can sometimes be the result of issues with your automatic garage door opener, it is more often an issue with springs that have become worn over time.

As your springs experience natural wear and tear over the years, they will begin to struggle to hold the weight of your door. This can result in your automatic garage door opener needing to work harder to lift the door and will ultimately cause the door to open slower. You may also notice that while the door opens slower, it actually closes much faster than it once did. In extreme cases your garage door may even slam to the ground when closing due to the inability to control the weight of the door.
